California Lithium Battery (“CalBattery”) Inc. has been working at Argonne National Laboratory to rapidly develop, commercialize and produce in the US a breakthrough low cost silicon graphene composite anode material for lithium ion batteries used in portable electronics, grid energy storage systems and electric vehicle (EV) applications.
This new “GEN3” composite anode battery material could become a disruptive technology by effectively lowering Li-ion battery life cycle costs by up to 70%. CalBattery’s current plans are to scale up the process equipment for commercial production and then to offer this GEN3 battery anode material in commercial production in the US by 2014.
CalBattery is a joint venture between California-based CALiB Power and Ionex Energy Storage Systems. The JV has developed an advanced anode composite material developed at Argonne National Laboratory. Preliminary tests indicate that this new material will improve the anode specific capacity performance of lithium battery anodes by a factor of 3X.
